EMC Events -Marmora – Snofest, which is celebrating its thirty-fifth anniversary between February 1 and 3, will, as in the past, include a wide variety of activities both for participants and observers. In addition to the much anticipated sled dog races which span everything from sprints to a 40 mile run, there will be skijoring races on both Saturday and Sunday, a Saturday craft sale at the Legion, a Sno Ball tournament at the local ball diamond on February 2, weight pulls and the very popular chainsaw carving demonstrations scheduled to take place on both days.
The fun filled, activity packed weekend will get underway at the community centre with the opening ceremonies at 6:45, followed at 7 p.m. by the very popular Marmora’s Got Talent, a competition for participants of all ages.
Who’s Growing Locally, which this year will take place on both Saturday and Sunday, will see the town hall filled with vendors whose goods feature a wide range of items grown and produced within the extended area.
The marketplace concept was conceived by the Marmora and Lake Environmental Advisory Committee (EAC) in 2009 to promote the practice of purchasing locally grown food. With the support of Harvest Hastings, the event was a success from its inception.
Vendors from within a hundred mile radius of Marmora were invited to sell their products at the Town Hall, with stall fees being waived.
EAC Chair, Vivian Collver, explains, “Care was taken not to duplicate the products to be sold, and each vendor was encouraged to bring written or illustrative material about their product as well as contact information to encourage follow up orders.”
This year’s event has expanded to include both days of SnoFest, with alpacas set to greet visitors just outside the doors of the Town Hall which will be open from 10:00 to 4:00 on February 2 and 10:00 to 2:00 on February 3.
Among the items to be sold by a total of more than a dozen vendors, are alpaca wool and wool goods, garlic, vegetables, pork, lamb, beef, jams, jellies, pickles, herbs, honey, grain products, apples, organic vinegar, heritage seeds, maple syrup, and a line of all natural products.
Two of the vendors are from the Marmora area. Ron and Tracey Derry, who for the past 20 years have lived on a 150 acre farm which includes and 100 acre maple bush, have been tapping the trees each spring for the past four years, with the extended family helping out during the season. Tracey points out that last year’s season was a short one, but says the family has hopes that this year will see a greater yield of nature’s sweet bounty.
In addition to selling maple syrup, the couple also sells chicken from their farm gate and eventually plan to sell beef as well.
Laurane Schofield, whose line of all natural products, sold under the name of Mahonia, will also be available. These include hemp oil soap, a range of body products, along with organic pesto, hummus and veggie crackers.
The show provides an opportunity to talk to the vendors, and in some cases, sample some of their delectable wares before while deciding which to purchase.
With the 35th edition of Marmora SnoFest only a short time away the entire region is starting to buzz about Canada’s longest running sled dog race series. Banners are up all over the town with a big thanks to the Municipality crew, and buttons are available at various Marmora & Lake businesses for $4.
The early bird draw was made January 7th for $150, and the winning button #83 was sold at Bailey’s Cafe in downtown Marmora. If you missed your chance don’t worry, there is another draw coming up after SnoFest for $100.
This years edition of Marmora’s Got Talent will be taking place Friday February 1st at 7PM above the arena. As always, everyone is asked to come out and cheer on our local talent. Top prize for this year is $150 in the adult category, and anyone wishing to pre-register should contact Lucas at the number below. Those wishing to register on February 1st must do so at the arena between 5:15-6:30PM.

Of course, no event would be able to maintain it’s high level of excellence without some tremendous support from the business community. As of today, over 25 businesses and organizations have sponsored SnoFest. Gold level sponsors include the Crowe Valley Lions Club & Northland Power. The Lions Club is sponsoring the 40 mile race Saturday February 2nd, & Northland Power the 25 mile race on Sunday February 3rd.
With the new title of Hastings County ‘Event of the Year’ spread across the 2013 program guide (available in local businesses now) SnoFest is ready to move from community event, to a winter tourism driver for the Marmora & Lake community.
“We’ve built some strong working partnerships this year with Best Western in Belleville & Ontario Highlands to move into the tourism market” says event coordinator Lucas Wales. “The entire team behind SnoFest deserves a lot of praise for turning this weekend into Hastings County Event of the Year. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone out next month!”
Marmora SnoFest is February 1-3 in Marmora & Lake.
